The MET Building, a striking mixed-use landmark in central Tirana, Albania, has been nominated for the prestigious 2026 Mies van der Rohe Award – the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture, recognizing it as one of Europe’s most significant contemporary architectural works.

Designed by Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), the MET Building stands as a new reference point within Tirana’s ongoing urban transformation, located along Boulevardi Zhan D’ark, near the city’s iconic Pyramid and in the heart of the Central Business District.

The project encompasses a 12-storey mixed-use structure combining high-quality residential, office, and commercial functions, with additional underground levels dedicated to parking and services. With a total height of approximately 48.7 m, the building occupies a compact urban plot and seeks to mediate between dense city fabric and public space.

At the core of the MET’s architectural concept is a sculpted, “excavated” volume that transforms regulatory constraints into a dynamic form. Its elliptical geometry is carved into a series of spiraling terraces and green diaphragms, creating generous outdoor spaces for residents while visually lightening the mass as it rises.

The façade articulation plays a central role in this expression. An alternation of transparent and opaque modules reinforces the building’s elegant rhythm and materiality, while floor-to-ceiling glazing at the lower levels enhances permeability and connection with the streetscape. The façade strategy also supports natural daylighting and passive solar control, contributing to the building’s environmental performance.

The nomination for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2026 highlights the MET Building’s architectural innovation, its thoughtful response to dense urban conditions, and its contribution to Tirana’s evolving cityscape. As an emblem of regenerative design and mixed-use excellence, the MET stands among a select group of European projects redefining the future of contemporary architecture.
