LuxWall Expands U.S. Vacuum Insulation Manufacturing with New Detroit Facility

LuxWall is expanding its U.S. manufacturing capacity with a new 276,000-square-foot facility in Detroit, Michigan, supported by financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through the Manufacturing Deployment Office (MDO) of the Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation.

The facility will manufacture LuxWall’s proprietary Transparent Insulation technology, a vacuum-insulation solution designed to improve the thermal performance of windows. Serial production is scheduled to begin in Q3 2027, with the plant expected to create up to 277 new jobs when operating at full capacity.

LuxWall’s technology addresses one of the weakest thermal elements of conventional building envelopes: glazing. While highly insulated walls can significantly limit heat transfer, conventional windows typically remain a major source of energy loss. Transparent Insulation is engineered to reduce this loss while maintaining the functional and visual characteristics required of windows.

The Detroit expansion follows LuxWall’s existing R&D Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Factory One in Litchfield, Michigan, strengthening the company’s manufacturing footprint within the state.

According to founder and CEO Scott Thomsen, the strongest current demand is coming from commercial retrofit projects, particularly multifamily housing, offices, hospitality, retail, higher education, healthcare and public-sector buildings. The technology is intended to improve building energy performance without requiring the cost and disruption associated with complete window replacement.

LuxWall states that wider adoption could have significant grid implications. If 10% of U.S. commercial buildings adopted its solution, the resulting reduction in building energy demand could provide enough electricity capacity to support approximately 1,000 medium-sized data centers.
