Significant changes are coming to the UK glass industry’s leading representative body. British Glass has today announced a major operational restructuring alongside the retirement of its long-standing Chief Executive, Dave Dalton. This move signals a strategic shift for the organization, separating the industry federation from its technical subsidiary to foster greater agility in a rapidly evolving market.
Dave Dalton, a fixture in the sector for four decades, confirmed he will step down as CEO this Christmas. He plans to support the transition period through the first quarter of the new year, with full retirement scheduled for March 2026. His departure paves the way for a distinct operational separation between British Glass and Glass Technology Services (GTS).
Historically, the two organizations have operated with shared senior management, back-office support, and consolidated finances. However, effective 2 January 2026, they will decouple to operate as fully independent entities, although GTS will remain wholly owned by British Glass as a shareholder.
The restructuring brings new leadership focus to both entities. Gareth Jones, previously the Operations and Commercial Director at British Glass, will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer for the newly independent GTS. His mandate will focus on the commercial and technical demands of the business. Simultaneously, Dr. Nick Kirk will continue to lead the British Glass Federation team, concentrating on member representation and high-level policy.
The organization stated that these changes are designed to ensure both entities can deliver maximum value to stakeholders by refining their specific missions. For the Federation, the focus is squarely on advocacy.
“Our priority is to ensure the industry’s voice is heard on key issues such as sustainability, decarbonisation and innovation,” commented Dr. Kirk.
Conversely, GTS will double down on technical services. Gareth Jones noted the necessity of this focus during a “challenging time” for the sector. He emphasized that GTS remains committed to supporting the supply chain through accredited testing and acting as a trusted R&D partner to develop routes for upscaling and pilot trials.
As the UK glass sector faces increasing pressure to innovate and decarbonize, this separation aims to provide the specialized focus required to meet the challenges of 2026 and beyond.
