Kenya’s glass industry is poised for significant expansion, driven by a confluence of factors that signal a bright future for the sector. Set against the backdrop of the upcoming Afriglass 27 trade show in Nairobi, the market is projected to experience exponential growth, presenting lucrative opportunities for businesses and investors alike.

Afriglass 27, scheduled for March 3-5, 2027, at the KICC exhibition centre in Nairobi, will undoubtedly serve as a key platform for industry players to showcase innovations, forge partnerships, and explore the expanding Kenyan market.

Several key drivers underpin this optimistic outlook. Foremost is the surging demand fueled by robust construction activity and increasing disposable incomes. Kenya’s ambitious Vision 2030 initiative is further catalyzing infrastructural development projects, creating a ripple effect of demand for diverse glass products.

Moreover, a growing awareness of energy efficiency is steering demand toward insulated glazing solutions in both residential and commercial buildings. This trend reflects a broader commitment to sustainable building practices and energy conservation, aligning with global environmental goals.

The container glass market is also demonstrating strong potential, projected to reach 147 thousand tonnes by 2030. Rapid urbanization is concentrating demand for branded beverages packaged in returnable glass bottles. Breweries are responding by expanding their premium product lines, and casual dining venues are adopting glass service-ware, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and brand image.

Furthermore, Kenya’s proactive approach to environmental responsibility is shaping the industry landscape. The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules, effective May 25, place obligations on producers to finance post-consumer collection, sorting, and recycling, particularly for glass due to its inherent recyclability. The Kenya Plastics Pact, endorsed by the government, further reinforces this commitment by targeting the elimination of problematic plastics by 2030, potentially driving further adoption of glass as a sustainable packaging alternative.

Kenya’s glass industry presents a compelling investment narrative. Driven by strong economic growth, infrastructure development, increasing environmental awareness, and proactive government policies, the market is poised for continued expansion and innovation in the years to come. Afriglass 27 offers a timely opportunity to witness firsthand the dynamism of this evolving sector and explore its potential for sustainable growth.

The Mozal Aluminium smelter in Mozambique, one of Africa’s largest primary aluminium producers, is set to be placed on care and maintenance from around 15 March 2026, following the failure to secure a long-term electricity supply agreement beyond the expiry of its current contract.

Owned by South32, Mozal has been in prolonged negotiations with the Government of Mozambique, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) and South Africa’s Eskom to establish a reliable and affordable power supply. Despite extensive discussions, the parties were unable to reach agreement, primarily due to disagreements over electricity pricing and growing supply constraints. These challenges have been intensified by ongoing drought conditions, which have reduced hydroelectric generation at HCB and increased reliance on higher-cost imported power.

Aluminium smelting is highly energy-intensive, and electricity accounts for a significant proportion of operating costs. Without a competitively priced power contract, continued operation of Mozal beyond March 2026 was deemed economically unviable. South32 CEO Graham Kerr acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, highlighting the company’s focus on supporting employees, suppliers, customers and local communities during the transition period.

Mozal’s FY26 production guidance remains unchanged at 240,000 tonnes, covering output up to March 2026. Beyond that point, the smelter will cease production while remaining in a condition that allows for a potential restart should conditions improve. South32 estimates that the one-off cost of placing the operation into care and maintenance will be approximately US$60 million, including employee separation costs and the termination of contractor agreements.

As part of the transition, alumina previously supplied from South32’s Worsley Alumina refinery to Mozal will be redirected and sold to third-party customers.

The move carries significant implications for Mozambique’s industrial sector and regional supply chains, underscoring the critical role of stable, competitively priced electricity in sustaining energy-intensive manufacturing across Southern Africa.

A Richards Consulting (ARC) has successfully partnered with Hulamin to finalise the Phase 2 upgrade of the S5 aluminium cold mill in South Africa, completing the work on schedule. Hulamin, the largest aluminium rolling operation in Sub-Saharan Africa and a major exporter with over 50% of its sales overseas, is now better equipped to meet growing market demands.

The upgrade focused on increasing the maximum strip width, allowing the S5 mill to process wider, high-quality 14-out can stock material and open access to new markets. Wider strip processing also improves product distribution across the plant, enhancing overall utilisation.

Central to the upgrade was a new entry bridle with a colouring roll, designed and supplied by ARC. This component ensures precise roll positioning, stable tension control, and ease of maintenance. The project also included longer work rolls and backup rolls with new bearing arrangements, modified chocks, and mounting for wider coolant spray bars and the existing coil feed unit.

ARC’s design accounts for higher strip temperatures and speeds while integrating new surface inspection cameras, strip scanners, load cells, and flatness measurement systems in a compact mill layout.

Elmaghraby Design House, in collaboration with Professor Dr. Gamal El-Kholy, has redefined architectural storytelling at Ain Shams University through a striking facade overhaul that bridges academic tradition with contemporary design. At the heart of this transformation is a bold expression of material innovation, an undulating aluminum curtain facade paired with a transparent glass curtain wall system that breathes new life into a once-abandoned lecture hall in Cairo.

Aluminum Louvers That Perform
The revitalized theater isn’t just a cultural hub, it’s an architectural statement. Taking inspiration from the metaphor of a stage curtain, the design team introduced a parametric aluminum louver system that wraps the structure in movement, rhythm, and light. These vertical fins aren’t merely decorative; they offer a dynamic response to Cairo’s intense sunlight, modulating solar exposure throughout the day while adding layers of texture and depth. At night, the structure gleams like an open curtain, drawing attention and curiosity across the campus.

Detail of parametric louvers casting rhythmic shadows | photo by Elmaghraby Design House

Glass as a Bridge Between Old and New
Behind the shimmering aluminum veil, a glass curtain wall enhances the visual dialogue between old and new. This transparent layer not only allows for passive lighting and views but also reflects the surrounding campus buildings, creating a mirrored connection between the university’s past and its evolving identity.

Architecture That Works as Hard as It Looks
Function meets form inside the building, too. With a 550-seat theater and lecture halls for 1,200 students, the space now supports both academic and cultural functions. But it’s the building envelope, its innovative use of aluminum and glass, that positions it as a benchmark in adaptive reuse and sustainable architecture.

Setting a Standard for the Future
This project signals a wider trend in educational architecture: using high-performance façade systems not just for efficiency, but to communicate bold new narratives. Ain Shams University’s theater is no longer just a place to learn, it’s a place to experience architecture in motion.

China Glass Holdings Co., Ltd. has initiated construction on a substantial new glass production facility in northeastern Egypt, signifying a significant investment in the region’s manufacturing capabilities and bolstering the growing economic partnership between China and Egypt.

The 2.23-billion-yuan ($310 million) project represents a considerable commitment to expanding the glass industry within Egypt and the surrounding North African market.

Located within the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone (TEDA), approximately 120 kilometers east of Cairo, the sprawling 500,000 square meter facility is strategically positioned for optimal logistics and access to regional markets. Upon completion, projected for the end of 2025, the plant will boast a daily production capacity of 1,000 tons of float glass and 800 tons of ultra-clear rolled photovoltaic glass. This impressive output is expected to generate approximately 1,000 new jobs, providing a substantial boost to local employment and economic growth.

The project aligns perfectly with Egypt’s national development strategy. Waleid Gamal El-Dein, chairman of the General Authority of Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone, highlighted the facility’s contribution to advancing the Egyptian glass industry, supporting renewable energy initiatives through photovoltaic glass production, reducing reliance on imports, and generating valuable foreign currency. This multifaceted impact underlines the project’s significance for Egypt’s economic diversification and self-sufficiency.

Cai Guo, vice president of China Glass Holdings, confirmed the project’s timeline, reiterating the company’s commitment to delivering the facility on schedule. Li Daixin, chairman of China-Africa TEDA Investment Co., Ltd., emphasized the plant’s role in modernizing Egypt’s glass production capabilities, enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian-made glass products both domestically and internationally. The anticipated increase in the supply of energy-efficient construction materials and advanced glass products will cater to the burgeoning demand within Egypt and neighboring countries.

This landmark project underscores the increasingly strong collaboration between China and Egypt in fostering industrial development and economic growth. It serves as a powerful example of successful foreign direct investment, contributing to sustainable development and technological innovation within the North African region. The facility’s focus on both traditional and advanced glass products positions it for long-term success and demonstrates a shared commitment to building a more prosperous future for both nations.

A Collaborative Effort

The event is made possible through the support of key sponsors and organizations, including CDK Industries, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), and the Project Management Institute (PMI) – Nigerian Chapter. Their involvement underscores the importance of collective efforts in driving the industry forward.

Big 5 Construct Nigeria is more than just an exhibition; it is a significant gathering of thought leaders, innovative businesses, and skilled professionals dedicated to shaping the future of the construction sector in Nigeria. As the industry seeks to capitalize on a $128 billion market, the opportunities presented at this event are invaluable for fostering growth, collaboration, and sustained development. For anyone involved in the construction industry, attending Big 5 Construct Nigeria will provide essential insights and connections that could define the next phase of their professional journey.
