Vitro Architectural Glass upgrades Pittsburgh Steelers trophy room with Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass

Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass by Vitro, which now safeguards the Steelers championship legacy, is one of the world’s clearest, most transparent float glass products.

Vitro Architectural Glass, in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has completed the redesign of the NFL franchise’s iconic trophy room, introducing a new high-clarity glazing system built around Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass to showcase and protect the team’s six Lombardi Trophies.

The upgraded installation was officially unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by senior executives from both organisations, including Ricardo Maiz, President of Vitro Architectural Glass; Fernando Diez, Vice President of Marketing, Innovation & New Business Development; Mark Seeton, Vice President of Sales; alongside Steelers representatives Ryan Huzjak, Senior Vice President of Business Operations, and A.J. Poole, Director of Partnership Sales and Activation.

The redesigned display replaces the conventional clear glass previously surrounding the Steelers’ championship trophies with Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass, a low-iron architectural glazing product developed by Vitro. Engineered for premium interior and exterior applications, the glass is designed to minimise the green tint typically associated with standard clear glass, delivering what Vitro describes as 87% less green appearance and significantly enhanced colour fidelity.

The project was intended not only to elevate the visual presentation of the trophies, but also to improve preservation and viewing quality for visitors entering the Steelers’ facility. The enhanced transparency allows the metallic detailing, reflections, and engraved surfaces of the Lombardi Trophies to appear with greater brightness and definition under display lighting conditions.

Now, Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass offers true-to-life views of the Steelers’ Super Bowl Championships.

Ricardo Maiz stated that Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass has previously been trusted in the protection of historically significant American artefacts, including the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, positioning the Steelers’ championship collection within a similar standard of visual protection and presentation.

The collaboration also reinforces the strategic partnership established between Vitro and the Steelers in 2024 through the NFL’s Global Markets Program. Under the initiative, Vitro became the Steelers’ first Mexico-based corporate partner, supporting the franchise’s growing engagement with its estimated eight million fans across Mexico.

Vitro’s connection to Pittsburgh remains central to the partnership. Originally founded in the city in 1883 as PPG Glass, the company continues to operate its Glass Technology Center in the region, where Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass was originally developed nearly 40 years ago. According to Fernando Diez, the same research-driven approach that led to the creation of the product continues to shape Vitro’s development of low embodied carbon and energy-efficient glazing systems for modern architecture.

In addition to display and interior applications, Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass can be combined with Vitro’s Solarban® solar control low-e glasses and reflective low-e coatings, enabling enhanced thermal performance, daylight management, and façade efficiency across commercial building projects.
