Pilkington UK Launches Optitherm™ S3 Plus to Enhance Thermal Performance and Reduce Triple Glazing Reflectance

Pilkington UK, part of the NSG Group, has introduced Optitherm™ S3 Plus, a new off-line coated low emissivity (low-e) glass designed specifically for use in triple glazing units (TGUs) across residential and commercial applications.

The product has been developed to respond to increasing demand for high-performance glazing driven by tighter building regulations and the UK’s transition toward net-zero-ready housing standards. When incorporated into a triple glazed unit, Optitherm S3 Plus can achieve Ug-values as low as 0.6 W/m²K, placing it among the more thermally efficient glass solutions currently available in the architectural glazing sector.

A key differentiating feature of the new glass is its lower external reflectance, which reduces the “mirror effect” commonly associated with highly insulating triple glazing. This improvement is aimed at maintaining a more natural façade appearance while still delivering strong thermal performance.

Manufactured in the UK, the glass is designed to be fully compatible with standard fabrication processes. It can be processed using conventional handling techniques and toughened without affecting its optical or thermal performance, making it suitable for a wide range of applications including new-build housing, commercial façades, and retrofit energy upgrades.

Phil Brown, European Technical Advisory Manager at Pilkington UK, highlighted that energy efficiency is becoming a core requirement for housebuilders, but stressed that aesthetics remain equally important. He noted that Optitherm S3 Plus was engineered to combine insulation performance with improved visual clarity, helping to address concerns around reflective glazing in modern architecture.
