Novelis Implements Leadership Changes at Oswego Plant Following Fire Incidents

The 16 September and 20 November fires are what caused most of the damage to key areas of the plant.

Novelis has implemented leadership changes at its Oswego aluminum rolling facility in New York following a series of fire-related incidents that occurred throughout 2025 and disrupted production at the site. The company confirmed that the Oswego Plant Manager and several members of the local leadership team are no longer employed.

The decision follows three separate fire events recorded at the facility: a major fire on 16 September, a smaller incident on 10 October, and a further significant fire on 20 November. Novelis has stated that the September and November fires caused the most substantial damage, affecting key operational areas of the plant. While the company has not disclosed technical details regarding the origin of the incidents, investigations into their causes remain ongoing.

The Oswego facility is Novelis’ largest wholly owned plant in North America and is a core production site for flat-rolled aluminum products, with a strong focus on automotive sheet supply. Disruptions at the plant had broader implications across the automotive supply chain. Following the September incident, Ford Motor Company indicated that the interruption in aluminum supply could result in a financial headwind of up to $1 billion.

Kristen Nelson, who assumed the role of Plant Manager in 2022 after holding multiple positions within Novelis, was among the leaders affected by the restructuring. At this stage, Novelis has not announced successor appointments or detailed recovery timelines for the impacted production areas.
