A fireworks explosion during the Boise Potato Drop on New Year’s Eve caused street-level windows of a downtown building to shatter, injuring a child attending the event, according to Idaho News 6.

The incident occurred near the AT&T building in Boise, Idaho, where fireworks detonated during the celebration. Broken glass from the damaged windows fell into the crowd below, striking a young girl identified as Isabella. She was transported to hospital and underwent surgery. A later update confirmed that she has since been released from medical care.

Following the incident, Dylan Cline, CEO and founder of the Idaho New Year’s Commission, stated that event organizers were cleared of wrongdoing. He added that the building owner had not updated the street-level windows to meet current city code requirements.

Idaho News 6 further reported that the Idaho State Capitol building also sustained damage during the fireworks explosion. Four windows were affected; however, the damage was described as minor.

In urban environments, particularly at street level and in areas hosting public gatherings, modern glazing systems are widely used to reduce injury risks associated with glass breakage.

Current building codes in many cities require advanced glass solutions, such as laminated or heat-treated glass, in locations where glass failure could pose a hazard to pedestrians. These technologies are designed to improve post-breakage behavior compared to older glazing installations.
