Corning Launches Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, Debuting on Motorola’s Upcoming Razr Fold

Corning Incorporated has introduced Corning® Gorilla® Glass Ceramic 3, the newest and toughest generation of its Gorilla Glass Ceramic technology, designed to provide significantly improved durability for modern consumer devices. The new cover material will make its market debut on the upcoming foldable smartphone from Motorola Mobility, the next-generation razr fold device.

With smartphones and foldable devices regularly exposed to accidental drops and harsh everyday conditions, durability has become a critical factor in product design. To ensure real-world performance, Corning conducts extensive laboratory testing that replicates common surfaces and environments encountered by consumers in daily use.

In internal testing conducted by Corning, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 demonstrated exceptional drop resistance, surviving drops of more than two metres onto surfaces engineered to replicate concrete, one of the most demanding impact surfaces for consumer electronics. These results highlight the material’s ability to protect devices from severe accidental impacts.

The material also showed strong performance in repeated drop scenarios. During laboratory tests, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 survived at least 20 consecutive drops from one metre onto asphalt-like surfaces, which commonly represent the types of ground surfaces where phones are dropped. By comparison, competitive aluminosilicate glass products typically failed during the first drop in similar conditions, demonstrating the long-term durability advantage of Corning’s glass-ceramic formulation.

The new material builds on Corning’s long-standing leadership in specialty glass technologies. Gorilla Glass solutions are currently used by many of the world’s leading consumer electronics brands and protect billions of smartphones and connected devices globally.
