Alba Initiates Controlled Shutdown of Three Reduction Lines to Ensure Operational Stability

Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the world’s largest single-site aluminium producer, has announced a controlled and safe shutdown of Reduction Lines 1, 2, and 3, which together account for 19% of the company’s total production capacity of 1,623,000 metric tonnes per year.

The move comes as a strategic operational measure amid ongoing supply and transit disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for the transport of raw materials. By temporarily halting these lines, Alba aims to optimise the use of its existing raw materials inventory while maintaining stability across Reduction Lines 4, 5, and 6.

Concentrating inputs on our most sustainable operating lines allows us to maintain production resilience, manage working capital efficiently, and reduce exposure to near-term supply volatility.

the company stated

During the shutdown, Alba will also carry out structured asset care and maintenance, including deep cleaning and housekeeping of the affected lines. These measures are intended to preserve equipment integrity and prepare for a safe restart once conditions improve. The shutdown is being executed in a manner that minimizes health, safety, environmental, and operational risks while safeguarding the long-term performance of the assets.

Alba emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to update the market as appropriate. The company is also working in coordination with suppliers and customers to manage commitments and mitigate any potential disruptions.
