Vitro, a leading producer of glass and related products, has announced the successful launch of its first on-site solar generation project.

Located on the roof of Coater 8 at its Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico facility, the project represents a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and efficient energy consumption.

The newly operational system comprises 1,135 solar panels, each with a capacity of 550W, resulting in a total installed generation capacity of 629 kW. This is projected to generate 1,091,700 kWh of renewable energy annually, all of which will be consumed within the Mexicali plant itself. This self-generated power will significantly reduce the plant’s reliance on the traditional power grid and mitigate approximately 478 tons of CO2 emissions per year – an environmental impact equivalent to planting nearly 40,000 trees.

The system boasts a projected lifespan of approximately 25 years, providing long-term sustainable energy solutions for Vitro’s operations. This substantial investment underscores Vitro’s dedication to responsible environmental practices and its proactive pursuit of more efficient and environmentally friendly energy sources.

This successful Mexicali project paves the way for future expansion. Vitro is currently developing two additional solar generation projects of comparable capacity at its CLT Laminate and CLT Templado plants in Mexico City. These projects are currently awaiting the necessary authorizations from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico’s national power utility, before commencing operations.

The implementation of these solar energy projects demonstrates Vitro’s leadership in the adoption of renewable energy within the glass manufacturing industry. It highlights a broader corporate strategy focused on minimizing environmental impact and achieving greater operational efficiency. The company’s commitment to sustainability is not just a corporate responsibility but a key element of its long-term strategic vision.
