LG’s Vision for Sustainable Glass Production
Youngseok Kim, Business Leader of Advanced Materials at LG Electronics, expresses the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Glass is ubiquitous in our lives, and we consider it our responsibility to collaborate and discover innovative solutions for manufacturing glass sustainably.”
LG Electronics is eager to explore cutting-edge technologies for glass production, including electric or hydrogen-powered furnaces. Additionally, the company aims to increase the proportion of recycled content in its glass products, contributing to a more sustainable future.
A Strategic Partnership
Earlier this year, a trade mission in the Republic of Korea, facilitated by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, paved the way for a strategic partnership. The British Embassy introduced Glass Futures to LG Electronics, marking the beginning of a collaboration between the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer electronics and home goods and the not-for-profit research and technology organization.
Through technical discussions, LG Electronics became a member of Glass Futures, gaining access to its world-leading technical expertise. This collaboration aligns with the UK-Republic of Korea Innovation Twins Programme, fostering partnerships supported by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
Glass Futures’ Global Centre of Excellence
Glass Futures’ GBP 54 million government-funded Global Centre of Excellence in St Helens serves as a hub for trialing disruptive technologies and generating ideas to accelerate the decarbonization and sustainability efforts in the glass and foundation industries.
Youngseok Kim expresses LG Electronics’ excitement to collaborate with Glass Futures and its growing membership of global glass manufacturers. The partnership aims to drive positive change, create opportunities for knowledge exchange on the latest technologies, and foster collective growth.
A Shared Vision for Innovation Toward Net Zero

From “EasyClean” to Antibacterial Innovations
LG Electronics has a history of innovation in glass technology, introducing glass powder into its ovens in 2013 to facilitate easy cleaning. The “EasyClean” enamel coating technology, developed in-house, marked the beginning of LG Electronics’ relationship with glass. Since 2022, antibacterial glass powder has been integrated into refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, showcasing LG’s dedication to advancing glass technology.
LG Electronics is now poised to expand its glass technology further by collaborating with Glass Futures, aiming for even greater advancements in sustainability and innovation.
