In a profound stride towards a greener future, Stoelzle Glass Group, a distinguished packaging glass manufacturer, proudly presents its third Sustainability Report. This report illuminates Stoelzle’s unwavering dedication to advancing sustainability across its operations, with a specific focus on energy efficiency, resource management, and employee well-being.
Setting Ambitious Decarbonization Targets
Stoelzle Glass Group’s ambitious decarbonization targets have earned official recognition from SBTi (Science-Based Targets initiative). The objectives are as follows:
- Minus 50 percent absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 2030
- Minus 15 percent absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 2030
Driving Decarbonization through Strategic Initiatives
The company’s decarbonization strategy revolves around three key pillars:
- Energy Efficiency: Stoelzle has implemented a state-of-the-art Process and Energy Data Management System across all its sites. This system has already yielded substantial energy savings, ranging from 3 percent to 5 percent, by optimizing energy consumption, detecting inefficiencies, and enhancing cooling curve settings.
- Innovative Technologies: Demonstrating their commitment to energy efficiency, Stoelzle has introduced a batch preheater at its Austrian production facility. This technology harnesses waste heat from exhaust to preheat and dry raw materials, resulting in an impressive 8 percent reduction in furnace energy consumption and annual energy savings of 4,000 MWh. Excess waste heat is channeled into the local district heating network, benefitting around 1,800 households.
- Renewable Energy: Stoelzle’s commitment to sustainability extends to producing 7 percent of the Stoelzle Czestochowa plant’s electricity consumption from waste heat by the end of 2023. This innovative approach involves using waste heat for steam production, which is then converted into electricity via an Organic Rankine Cycle.
Pioneering the Glass Furnace of the Future
Looking ahead, Stoelzle is actively investing in research to transition from gas to electricity in its production processes. As a vital contributor to the International Partners in Glass Research (IPGR) consortium, Stoelzle is at the forefront of developing a “glass furnace of the future” that maximizes energy efficiency through the utilization of green hydrogen and electricity. By 2024, Stoelzle aims to operationalize a fully electric feeder at its Austrian amber glass furnace, setting a pioneering benchmark for the European glass industry.
