Pilkington UK has introduced Pilkington Mirai Øne™, an architectural float glass offering more than 35% lower embodied carbon than its standard float glass, expanding the options available to architects and façade specifiers seeking to reduce the environmental impact of buildings.
The reduction is achieved through increased recycled glass content, reducing the need for virgin raw materials, alongside other decarbonisation measures. The product retains the performance, quality and aesthetics of conventional float glass and can be coated, laminated or incorporated into insulating glass units (IGUs).
Mirai Øne builds on the original Pilkington Mirai, launched in 2023 with a reported 52% reduction in embodied carbon compared with standard float glass. While the original product targets projects with more ambitious carbon-reduction requirements, Mirai Øne offers a more accessible alternative for commercial and residential applications.
The new glass is available across European markets. Its Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), independently verified, is currently in preparation. The product is intended to support sustainability benchmarks associated with LEED and BREEAM certification and growing regulatory attention to embodied carbon.
The launch forms part of NSG Group’s makechange™ sustainability programme, which includes alternative-fuel trials, carbon-capture technology and initiatives to improve glass recycling.
