The National Glass Association (NGA) partnered with Future Construction Leaders during its annual summer camp in San Diego last month, introducing high school girls to career opportunities in the glass and glazing industry through practical, hands-on learning.
Designed for students in grades 9–12, the camp exposes participants to a wide range of construction trades while helping them develop practical skills and gain firsthand insight into industry careers. During the dedicated glazing day, campers learned the fundamentals of glass cutting and completed custom mirror projects under the guidance of experienced industry professionals.

The activity was led by Kristie Rehberger of A Glasco Inc., who coordinated a team of glazing industry volunteers. Materials and hardware for the workshop were donated by Frameless Hardware Company, enabling each participant to safely practice glass cutting techniques and create a personalized mirror to take home.
Rehberger encouraged the students to approach the industry with confidence, offering a simple but powerful message: “Don’t be afraid. You got this. Go for it, do it.” Her comments reflected the workshop’s broader goal of making careers in glass and glazing more accessible to young women entering the skilled trades.

The event also featured participation from Syndi Sim of Q-railing, who serves on the NGA Board of Directors. When asked to describe the future of women in the glass and glazing industry in one word, she chose “inspiration.” Sim encouraged campers to remain curious and engaged, emphasizing that asking questions is one of the most valuable ways to learn and grow within the profession.
According to Azahalia Valdez Rosas, Executive Director of Future Construction Leaders, the organization aims to empower girls to explore diverse career pathways.
