The National Black Theatre (NBT) in Harlem is beginning a new chapter with the redevelopment of its historic site at 2031 National Black Theatre Way. Set for completion in 2027, the project will transform the institution into a modern performing arts destination and creative hub for the community.
Designed by Frida Escobedo within a 22-story mixed-use complex, and with interiors by Marvel Architects, the new 2,500-square-meter facility will unite theatre, design, and cultural entrepreneurship.
Envisioned as a “Theatre of the Future,” the building will include a 250-seat flexible performance hall, a 99-seat studio theatre, and an exhibition space celebrating local artists and NBT’s Yoruba art collection. It will also feature rehearsal spaces and open areas designed to encourage collaboration and dialogue. The interior design emphasizes natural light, organic materials, and calm spaces that inspire creativity and connection.

Founded in 1968 by the late Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, NBT has long been a symbol of Black artistic excellence and Harlem’s cultural identity. Its redevelopment strengthens this legacy, connecting it with neighboring landmarks such as the Apollo Theater and the Studio Museum.
Through programs like Naming Justice, the project also honors Black and BIPOC ancestors, transforming the new building into both a tribute to the past and a vision for Harlem’s creative future.
