Monumental Glass Elevates the Portland Museum of Art Expansion

The transformation of architectural vision into a true icon often depends on material innovation, and in the case of the new Rothko Pavilion at the Portland Museum of Art, glass takes center stage. Developed with advanced solutions from Tvitec System Glass and CRICURSA, both part of Tvitec Group, this project showcases the power of large-format, high-performance glazing in contemporary architecture.

For the Rothko Pavilion, designed by Vinci Hamp Architects in collaboration with Hennebery Eddy Architects, glass panels reaching up to 9 meters in height were manufactured, creating a seamless, light-filled connection between interior and exterior spaces.

The scale alone is impressive, but the technical capacity goes even further: Tvitec Group can produce flat glass exceeding 12,000 mm x 3,021 mm and curved units up to 18,000 mm, pushing the boundaries of what is structurally and aesthetically possible.

Beyond size, these glazing systems are engineered for performance. High solar control, thermal insulation, and structural strength ensure that such monumental glass elements meet strict energy and safety standards. Large-format glass also reduces the need for visible framing, enhancing transparency and delivering a cleaner, more immersive architectural experience.

As museums evolve into open, engaging public spaces, projects like the Rothko Pavilion demonstrate how glass is no longer just a façade element, it becomes a defining feature of modern cultural architecture.
