Italian Competition Authority Clears Glassmakers in Wine Bottle Price Investigation

Verallia announces that the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) has officially closed its antitrust investigation into several glass manufacturers operating in the wine bottle sector, concluding that no evidence of price collusion was found among market players.

The investigation was launched in 2023 following sharp price increases recorded in 2022, a period marked by significant disruption across the European glass industry. At the time, concerns were raised that coordinated behaviour among producers may have contributed to rising costs for wine and beverage packaging.

However, after an in-depth review, the AGCM determined that the price increases were not the result of anti-competitive agreements, but rather reflected an extraordinary cost environment. According to the Authority, glassmakers were facing unprecedented pressure from energy price spikesraw material cost inflation, and strong post-pandemic demand, all of which directly impacted production economics.

The Authority underlined that these factors affected the entire sector simultaneously, leading to similar pricing dynamics across producers without implying coordination or unlawful conduct. As a result, the case was formally archived, bringing regulatory clarity to one of Europe’s most strategically important packaging segments.

The decision provides an important signal for the European container glass industry, which continues to navigate high energy intensity, decarbonisation investments, and volatile demand from wine, spirits, and food markets. Industry representatives have welcomed the outcome, noting that transparent cost-based pricing remains essential to sustaining supply security and long-term manufacturing capacity.

For wine producers and brand owners, the ruling confirms that recent price adjustments were driven by structural market pressures rather than market manipulation, helping restore confidence in supplier relationships at a time when stability remains critical.
