The Otto Schott Research Award, a prestigious accolade in the field of glass science, has been awarded for the 18th time, recognizing the outstanding contributions of Professor Setsuhisa Tanabe from Kyoto University in Japan.

This distinguished award, endowed with a prize of EUR 25,000, celebrates the pioneering achievements of researchers in the areas of glass, glass-ceramics, and related advanced materials.

Professor Tanabe, a renowned leader in the international field of active doped optical materials, has been honored for his groundbreaking work and long-standing contributions to education and training in Japan and globally. As a professor of material chemistry at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, he has established himself as a prominent figure in the realms of rare-earth doped glass, glass-ceramic, and optically active ceramic materials.

The Otto Schott Research Award, first granted in 1991, has a rich history of supporting and recognizing the most remarkable achievements in basic and applied research related to glass, glass-ceramics, and advanced materials. The award is managed by the Ernst Abbe Fund and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Association for German Science), underscoring the global significance of this accolade.

The award is named after Otto Schott, the pioneering glass scientist who, alongside Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss, founded the Schott & Associates Glass Technology and Laboratory in 1884, which has since grown into the global leader in specialty glass and materials, SCHOTT AG. Schott’s groundbreaking work in developing innovative glass solutions for optics, pharmaceuticals, and numerous other technical applications has left an indelible mark on the industry.
