In Amsterdam, the architecture studio Studioninedots has completed Light House, a striking residence defined by a stacked vertical box system and a distinctive glass block facade. The project reimagines domestic space by prioritizing flexibility, light, and environmental performance.

The house is organized as a series of modular volumes, each initially programmed for a specific function but designed for reconfiguration as household needs change over time. A suspended box above the kitchen offers a semi-enclosed area suitable for reading or rest, while the topmost volume features a larger, open room with arched openings on both sides. This upper room connects seamlessly to an outdoor terrace and frames expansive views toward the IJmeer lake, merging interior and exterior experiences.

At ground level, the house is wrapped in a facade of square glass blocks. This envelope filters daylight into interior spaces while maintaining privacy, balancing openness with discretion. The square motif continues across the rear facade in the form of steel grating panels, reinforcing a coherent architectural language throughout the project.

Material choices emphasize a dialogue between industrial and natural surfaces. Raw, reflective, and translucent finishes interact with shifting daylight, creating dynamic visual effects throughout the day. Structurally, the residence relies on a lightweight steel frame paired with prefabricated timber components. This modular system allows for adaptability, disassembly, and reuse, embracing circular design principles.

Responding to the environmental context of Centrumeiland, Light House incorporates on-site water management strategies and sustainable material selection, demonstrating a commitment to ecological performance alongside architectural innovation.
