FTI World Congress 2026 Brings 300+ Facade Professionals to Pittsburgh

The 2026 Facade Tectonics Institute (FTI) World Congress brought together more than 300 architects, engineers, researchers, manufacturers and construction professionals at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from September 28 to October 2. Hosted in collaboration with CMU’s School of Architecture, the event focused on facade innovation, building performance and emerging technologies under the theme “Where Facade Innovation Meets Performance.”

The Congress featured more than 100 contributing authors and over two dozen technical sessions, examining high-performance building envelopes, adaptive facade systems, computational design, robotic construction, circularity and climate resilience.

Appropriate Technology and Building Performance

Keynote speakers James Timberlake, FAIA, of KieranTimberlake, and Erik Olsen of Transsolar KlimaEngineering joined Carnegie Mellon University Professor Vivian Loftness and FTI Founder Mic Patterson to explore appropriate technology in facade design. Discussions considered how low-tech and high-tech approaches can work together to improve building performance while addressing environmental challenges.

Practical demonstrations and site visits complemented the research programme. At TAKTL’s manufacturing facility, participants examined the production of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) architectural panels. A construction tour of Carnegie Mellon University’s Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences offered insight into project delivery, while a visit to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens highlighted sustainable building strategies.

Two specialized workshops addressed emerging technologies: Robots, Vision & Construction, exploring robotic fabrication and computer vision, and Cultivated Skins: Multistrain Engineered Living Materials for Adaptive Facades, examining the potential of engineered living materials for future building envelopes.

Research, Collaboration and Industry Recognition

Beyond the technical sessions, networking events connected professionals across disciplines and regions. The World Congress Reception at Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts, sponsored by Technoform, featured live jazz by Tony Campbell and Jazzsurgery.

The programme concluded with the FTI College of Fellows Induction Ceremony and Closing Reception, sponsored by Walter P Moore, recognizing contributions to facade design, engineering, research and professional development.
