The Greater Boise Auditorium District (GBAD) is replacing smart glass installed at Boise Centre East in Boise, Idaho, following years of fogging, corrosion and other failures. The $319,000 replacement project is moving forward while GBAD’s lawsuit against View Inc. remains ongoing.
Approximately 72 insulating glass units supplied by View were installed in 2016 as part of the multi-story convention centre. The electrochromic windows were marketed as a technology capable of dynamically tinting glass while delivering significant energy savings.
According to GBAD’s 2024 lawsuit, defects began appearing in late 2018 or early 2019, including interior fogging and bubbling that obstructed views and affected performance. View reportedly acknowledged the issue and retrofitted the windows with new sealant and EdgeBlack, an aluminium strip designed to improve the units’ sealing.
Further problems emerged in 2021, when another window developed “pixilation.” GBAD says a View customer service manager identified the problem as a known Type 2 corrosion failure linked to a production flaw. By the time the lawsuit was filed, 13 windows had failed. 
Rather than wait for the litigation to conclude, GBAD’s board approved $319,000 to replace the affected smart glass with conventional glazing. Executive Director Cody Lund said the deteriorating appearance was having a significant visual impact on the building.
GBAD alleges that View has disputed responsibility for most replacement-related costs, including removal, transportation and installation. The lawsuit remains unresolved.
