Vidrala Inaugurates 7 MW Solar Installation at Llodio Plant to Support Glass Production Decarbonisation

Vidrala has officially inaugurated a new photovoltaic installation at its Llodio plant in Álava, Basque Country, Spain, marking a significant step in the company’s renewable energy and decarbonisation strategy. The inauguration was attended by the Basque Government’s Minister for Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, and Deputy Minister for Energy Transition, Irantzu Allende.

The industrial self-consumption facility features an installed capacity of 7 MW and covers approximately 30,000 square metres of industrial rooftop, making it one of the largest photovoltaic installations for industrial self-consumption in the Basque Country. The project represents an investment of €3.2 million, supported by a 25% grant from the Basque Government’s self-consumption programme, managed by the Basque Energy Agency (EVE).

The solar installation will generate renewable electricity directly for the Llodio plant, which produces more than 500 million glass containers annually. By increasing the share of renewable energy used in production, the facility is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,909 tonnes per year.

The project reinforces Vidrala’s broader sustainability strategy, focused on improving energy efficiency, expanding renewable electricity generation, increasing recycled raw material use, and exploring alternative energy sources.
