Verallia has taken another major step in its sustainability strategy with the commissioning of its first hybrid glass furnace at its Zaragoza plant in Zaragoza. The project forms part of the company’s long-term commitment to reducing carbon emissions across its operations and accelerating the transition toward low-carbon glass production.
Backed by its strengthened CSR roadmap and the validation of its Net Zero 2040 trajectory by the Science Based Targets initiative, Verallia aims to reduce its CO2 emissions from scopes 1 and 2 by 46.2 percent by 2030 compared with 2019 levels, and by 90 percent by 2040. This makes the company the first global producer of glass packaging for food and beverages to adopt such an ambitious long-term emissions target.
Developed in partnership with SORG, the Zaragoza furnace represents a EUR 63 million investment and combines 70 percent renewable electricity with 30 percent natural gas or biofuel. The technology significantly lowers environmental impact while maintaining industrial reliability and production flexibility.
With three production lines and the ability to manufacture multiple glass colours, the upgraded Zaragoza facility will raise output to 1.3 million containers per day, strengthening its position as one of Verallia’s key production sites in the Iberian market.
