Investigating the Performance of Glass Packaging Recycling in Europe: Close the Glass Loop’s Groundbreaking Survey

As we delve into the fascinating realm of glass packaging recycling. This groundbreaking initiative, spanning from December 2021 to October 2022, sought to evaluate the performance of glass packaging recycling throughout Europe. Today, we bring you a captivating glimpse into the insights unearthed by this enlightening study.

To ensure a comprehensive representation, the survey was diligently distributed to esteemed members of two prominent organizations:  FERVER (European Glass Recyclers’ Federation) and FEVE (European Container Glass Federation). Furthermore, the survey reached the 11 esteemed National Platforms of Close the Glass Loop, which encompassed Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

The response to this monumental undertaking was awe-inspiring, as a total of 30 insightful responses were collected. It’s worth noting that the data gathered reflects the year 2019, offering a valuable snapshot of the glass packaging recycling landscape during that period. To ensure the utmost accuracy, respondents were meticulously requested to compile data for their operations at the national level. For those with operations spanning multiple countries, individual responses were thoughtfully submitted per country.

While the profound insights garnered from this survey are undeniably noteworthy, it’s essential to acknowledge that each response was voluntary. It’s important to recognize that the data provided was not cross-checked by a third-party. Consequently, the results presented in this report serve as an invaluable indication, shedding light on the state of glass packaging recycling in Europe. However, it’s imperative to clarify that these results cannot be utilized for Life Cycle Assessment calculations or to represent a recycling rate for glass.
