UNS has completed One Helix, the new European headquarters for Neogene Therapeutics, establishing a new benchmark for sustainable laboratory design within the life sciences sector. Located on the Amsterdam University Medical Centre (Amsterdam UMC) campus, the 6,515 m² facility combines advanced laboratories, offices, and supporting amenities in an environment designed to encourage collaboration, innovation, and scientific progress.
Developed by Breakthrough Properties, a global life sciences real estate company, One Helix provides Neogene Therapeutics with a highly advanced workplace supporting its research and development activities in biotechnology. Neogene, a wholly owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca, specializes in the discovery, development, and production of T-cell receptor (TCR) therapies aimed at treating solid cancers.

The completed five-story building forms part of the Amsterdam UMC ecosystem, one of Europe’s leading medical research environments, where scientists, physicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, and companies collaborate to accelerate advances in healthcare.
Sustainability was a central focus throughout the design and construction process. One Helix is an all-electric building designed to achieve net zero emissions and operates with net energy positive performance. The project achieved BREEAM Outstanding certification, demonstrating exceptional environmental performance, while its Material Performance Indicator (MPG) score of 0.60 reflects a strong focus on reducing embodied carbon through responsible material selection and construction strategies.

UNS designed the building to go beyond the functional requirements of a laboratory environment by integrating principles of wellbeing, flexibility, and connection with nature. Biophilic design elements, natural materials, and carefully planned collaborative spaces create an environment that supports both scientific research and employee wellbeing.
“By integrating biophilic design elements and natural materials, we’ve created spaces that go beyond functionality – spaces that promote well-being and inspire innovation for all Neogene employees,” said Ben van Berkel, Founder and Principal Architect of UNS.
