The University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering (CSE) celebrated the grand re-opening of Fraser Hall on October 29, 2025, following a major renovation and five-story expansion by VJAA and BWBR Architects. Overlooking the Mississippi River, the 117,435-square-foot facility consolidates general, life, and organic chemistry programs, housing 18 active learning labs, a tutoring center, and flexible collaboration spaces.
A standout feature is the custom sun shade system finished in Linetec Copper Anodize, fabricated and installed by M.G. McGrath. The system includes over 1,000 square feet of curved, perforated aluminum fins integrated into the EFCO 5600 Series curtain wall. The anodized copper finish maintains its bright metallic luster without patina, requiring minimal maintenance while meeting AAMA 611 Class I specifications. Linetec’s environmentally responsible anodizing process is Living Building Challenge Red List Free, ensuring durability and sustainability for decades.

Complementing the copper accents, the building incorporates Fraser Gray-painted curtain wall components, bird-friendly glass, and an art glass mural by Dyani White Hawk. Natural daylight flows into classrooms and labs, supporting an interactive and motivating learning environment. Students and faculty emphasize how the new design fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and modern science instruction, reflecting the university’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the future workforce.
Fraser Hall now serves approximately 5,000 undergraduates, enhancing both education and campus life.
