UK Glass Industry Faces Energy Crisis and Policy Challenges, Warns British Glass CEO

British Glass CEO Dave Dalton spoke at the Glass Focus Awards held in Manchester, UK, last week.

British Glass CEO Dave Dalton has warned that the UK glass industry is navigating its most difficult period ever. Speaking at the Glass Focus Awards in Manchester, Dalton highlighted pressures from rising energy costs, government policies, net zero targets, and the influx of imported glass products.

Dalton recalled that just three years ago, he had praised the resilience of the UK glass sector compared to other heavy industries. Today, however, he acknowledges the industry is “staring down the barrel” of unprecedented challenges. British Glass has been lobbying the UK Government extensively, with President Dean Butler reporting around 20 visits to Parliament this year alone, focusing on climate change policy, energy-intensive manufacturing support, and trade regulations.

Despite these obstacles, Dalton remains cautiously optimistic, citing the sector’s skilled workforce and technological capability. “We will find a way through this because this industry deserves it,” he concluded, urging resilience and innovation.
