The Tirana Steles, a conceptual project by Davide Macullo Architects, proposes a powerful architectural vision that connects Albania’s geological landscape with contemporary urban life. Designed as a mixed-use development combining residential apartments, hospitality functions, and restaurant or nightlife spaces, the project is currently in the concept stage.
The idea behind Tirana Steles is deeply rooted in the geographical and geological identity of Albania. Situated at the intersection of the Eurasian, African, Aegean and Anatolian tectonic plates, the country occupies a unique position within the Mediterranean region. The project interprets this dynamic landscape by representing what the architect describes as the moment of calm following the ancestral movement of tectonic plates.

Architecturally, the proposal takes the form of slender vertical structures resembling contemporary menhirs, stone monuments historically associated with ancient civilizations. These “steles” taper upwards, creating a visual dialogue between earth and sky, while symbolising humanity’s evolving relationship with nature.
The design integrates glazed architectural elements that represent the horizontal layers of the Mediterranean underwater world. Transparent and softly translucent surfaces evoke the vitality, movement and geological stratification of the sea, while vibrant colours reflect the richness of the region’s climate and natural environment.

At ground level, the project emphasizes lightness and minimal contact with the urban fabric, allowing pedestrian spaces to remain open and dynamic. The slender vertical elements rise above the city, creating a symbolic and spatial contrast between the human-scale urban environment and the monumental presence of the structures.
Natural stone cladding plays a central role in the concept. The stones selected for the façades are intended to represent Albania’s geological strength, serving as a physical expression of the country’s land and natural heritage.
The project also envisions the creation of an “Ispace”, a public area dedicated to community interaction and human spatial perception. This open space symbolises air and freedom, contributing to broader efforts to promote social wellbeing and public life within Tirana’s urban development.
