St‑Prex Recycling Facility to Close, Vetropack Shifts Operations Elsewhere

The Vetropack Group has confirmed that its glass recycling operations at the St‑Prex site in Switzerland will cease on February 28, 2026. This closure completes the phased shutdown of the facility following the glass production plant’s closure last year. Until now, the site had continued processing cullet, recycled glass ready for remelting, serving around 30 municipal partners in the region.

Vetropack explained that operating a cullet plant without an adjacent production facility is no longer sustainable, economically or environmentally. At present, the processed glass is shipped to other Vetropack plants in Europe, a solution that cannot be maintained in the long term.

Without a directly connected production facility, continuing operations at St‑Prex is not viable.

stated Johann Reiter, CEO of Vetropack Group.

Despite the closure, Vetropack reassured municipalities of its ongoing commitment to glass recycling in Switzerland. The company plans to offer concrete alternatives through its long-standing partner network, while municipalities remain free to select the solution that best fits their needs. The aim is to ensure a smooth and orderly transition for all involved.

Employees whose contracts were extended for the transitional phase have been informed that their employment will end in February 2026. A small team will remain on site afterward to remove remaining glass and finalize the facility’s closure.

The St‑Prex site has been part of Vetropack’s Swiss operations for decades. Its closure reflects a wider trend in Europe, where consolidation of glass production and recycling is increasingly common. By relocating cullet processing to other plants, Vetropack intends to maintain operational efficiency while continuing to support sustainable recycling practices across its network.
