In a move that signals a clear shift in strategic priorities, Şişecam has announced its decision to terminate its partnership with biotechnology group 7C Basalia Global, citing insufficient technical and operational progress within the collaboration.
The partnership began with high expectations in 2021, when Şişecam signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at creating a global joint venture centered on Basalia Technology, a biotechnology solution designed to convert various types of waste into harmless materials. The initiative aligned with broader industry ambitions toward circular economy principles and sustainable industrial processes, positioning the collaboration as a potentially significant step toward environmental innovation.
By May 2022, the project advanced formally with the registration of 7C Basalia Global in Switzerland. Established with a capital of 1,050,000 CHF (approximately $1.4 million), the venture included Şişecam as a minority stakeholder holding a 10% participation. At the time, the agreement reflected the glass manufacturer’s intent to support the international expansion and implementation of Basalia Technology across its global operations.
However, according to the company’s latest Board of Directors assessment, progress within the project has not met expectations. The review concluded that the partnership had not achieved sufficient technical and operational advancement to justify continued participation. As a result, Şişecam determined that maintaining the collaboration no longer aligned with its strategic interests.
The company will now begin the official procedures required to terminate its involvement in the venture. Şişecam also stated that all further developments related to the process will be disclosed publicly in accordance with applicable regulations, reinforcing transparency toward stakeholders and the market.
While the decision marks the end of a partnership initially framed around sustainability and innovation, it also reflects a broader industry reality: emerging technologies must demonstrate clear scalability and measurable progress to remain viable within large industrial ecosystems. For Şişecam, the move suggests a renewed focus on initiatives that can deliver tangible technical and operational outcomes within defined timelines.
