FGIA Expands Sustainability Focus with New Aluminum Resource Pages

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance has introduced a new set of aluminum sustainability webpages designed to strengthen industry awareness around the environmental performance of aluminium fenestration systems.

Developed under the organization’s Aluminum Material Council (AMC), the new online resource provides a clearer understanding of aluminum’s lifecycle, recyclability, and long-term sustainability performance within modern façade and window applications.

According to the association, the initiative aims to translate complex sustainability topics into practical, accessible information for manufacturers, specifiers and industry stakeholders. The updated section explores how aluminum performs across different stages of product development, from material sourcing and manufacturing to operational use and end-of-life processing.

One of the key additions is a dedicated page analysing the life cycle of aluminum used in fenestration products. The resource addresses critical sustainability themes such as operational carbon impacts, embodied carbon considerations and the overall carbon footprint associated with aluminum systems.

The content also highlights the importance of design decisions and product longevity, explaining how durability and performance influence environmental outcomes over time, a growing consideration as façades increasingly align with stricter efficiency and decarbonisation targets across global markets.

A second section focuses on aluminum recyclability, reinforcing the material’s position within circular construction strategies. The pages explain how recycling processes significantly reduce energy demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to primary aluminum production.

Additional insights cover recycling circularity, material recovery processes and the high recycled content typically achievable in aluminum systems, factors that continue to drive its adoption in façade engineering and architectural applications.
