EIB Provides €75 Million Loan to AMAG to Accelerate Aluminium Innovation

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €75 million financing agreement for Austrian aluminium producer AMAG, supporting advanced research, digitalisation and sustainable manufacturing at the company’s Ranshofen production site in Upper Austria.

The financing marks the first loan granted in Austria under the EIB’s TechEU programme, an initiative designed to strengthen industrial innovation and technological independence across Europe. The loan contributes to AMAG’s broader investment plan valued at €168 million for the 2025–2028 period, targeting long-term improvements in product development and process efficiency.

AMAG plans to use the funds to advance new aluminium solutions while further digitalising and environmentally optimising its manufacturing operations. The company’s Ranshofen plant, which employs approximately 2,000 people, is considered one of Europe’s most advanced aluminium production facilities and plays a strategic role in regional industrial capacity.

EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer described the financing as a flagship example of how targeted investment in research, digital technologies and sustainable production can strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and industrial resilience. The signing ceremony took place at the Ranshofen site, highlighting its importance within Europe’s critical raw materials and manufacturing ecosystem.

For AMAG, the funding supports continued expansion of its technological capabilities, including development of specialised rolled and cast aluminium products used in demanding industries such as automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering and construction. More than half of the company’s output already serves high-value applications, reflecting its strong innovation focus. In 2024, AMAG reported an R&D intensity of 1.6% of revenue, among the highest levels reported by western aluminium producers.
