Saint-Gobain Glass Launches COOL-LITE® SKL 170 for High-Performance Complex Façades

Saint-Gobain Glass has introduced COOL-LITE® SKL 170, a new highly selective solar control coating developed specifically for laminated glass applications used in complex façade designs.

Designed to be positioned in position 2 within laminated glazing, directly against the interlayer, the new product responds to increasing demand for advanced solar control solutions that combine aesthetics, energy efficiency and technical adaptability in contemporary architecture.

COOL-LITE® SKL 170 has been engineered primarily for use in demanding façade configurations such as:

▪ Double Skin Façades (DSF)
▪ Close Cavity Façades (CCF)

These systems require glass that balances high daylight transmission with strong solar control to maintain interior comfort while protecting technical systems such as cavity blinds and ventilation equipment.

The coating features a double silver layer, enabling:

  • Visible light transmission above 70%, maximizing natural daylight penetration
  • Low solar factor, reducing heat build-up within façade cavities
  • Neutral appearance, stable from multiple viewing angles
  • Low external reflection, supporting compliance with architectural and regulatory requirements

By reducing solar gain, the glass contributes to lowering ventilation loads and optimizing energy performance in high-glazing-ratio buildings.

While developed for complex façades, COOL-LITE® SKL 170 is also suitable for other large glazed areas requiring solar control without sacrificing transparency or visual comfort, including:

  • Skylights and roof glazing
  • Entrance canopies and public access structures
  • Transport hubs, atriums and large station halls

These applications benefit from improved glare control, reduced cooling demands, and enhanced occupant comfort.

The new coating is available on ORAÉ® low-carbon glass, enabling project teams to address both operational and embodied carbon targets.

In addition, the product is supported by:

  • A verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
  • Cradle to Cradle Certified® V4.0 Bronze accreditation

This positions COOL-LITE® SKL 170 as a solution aligned with evolving sustainability frameworks and green building standards.
