AMC Hospital, the largest healthcare facility in The Netherlands with more than 1,000 beds, has begun a major renovation after 40 years of service. At the centre of this upgrade is glass – specifically the replacement of over 10,000 m² of outdated wired glass with Pyroguard’s modern fire safety glazing.
MedicomZes, specialists in hospital construction, led the project alongside fabricator and installer Glasdesign. With the hospital remaining operational throughout the works, safety, efficiency, and compliance were top priorities. This is where Pyroguard’s expertise proved essential.
A key challenge was the hospital’s existing timber frames. To ensure compatibility, Pyroguard worked closely with consultancy Peutz, carrying out system testing that confirmed the original frames could safely be retained. This avoided unnecessary disruption and costs while keeping the project on schedule.

For internal partitions, Pyroguard Rapide Impact (7mm clear and satin) was specified, providing tested fire resistance alongside high levels of light transmission and privacy where needed. In larger, more demanding areas, Pyroguard Protect (T EW30 and T EI30) was installed, delivering robust fire protection while aligning with the hospital’s contemporary design goals.
The result is a safer, brighter, and more compliant environment for patients and staff, with the first phase already complete and further work planned in the coming years. By combining performance with aesthetics, Pyroguard has helped AMC Hospital set a new benchmark for safety-focused healthcare design.
