The former Alliston Union Public School has found new life as the administrative centre of New Tecumseth, transformed into a vibrant 4,200-square-metre community hub by +VG Architects. This project is a shining example of repurposing historic buildings while fostering a strong civic identity through daylight-focused design.
At the core of this transformation is a striking atrium crafted from wood and glass, inviting the public into a space defined by transparency, accessibility, and sustainability. The design balances respect for the building’s heritage with contemporary architectural elements that serve the community’s evolving needs.

A standout feature is the integration of OKAWOOD glass, which plays a crucial role in shaping the building’s atmosphere. This innovative daylight solution incorporates wooden louvres within the insulating glass, providing effective solar and glare protection without sacrificing natural light. The warm, filtered sunlight enhances the interior environment, reinforcing the centre’s connection to natural materials and creating a welcoming, community-oriented space.
By combining heritage preservation with modern materials like OKAWOOD, New Tecumseth’s town hall sets a new standard for sustainable, daylight-rich civic architecture.
