FGIA Releases Updated Design Wind Loads Technical Information Report
The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has recently announced an update to their technical information report for determining design wind loads on exterior fenestration and cladding systems. Using the national standards ASCE/SEI 7-16 and ASCE/SEI 7-22, the report is a valuable resource for architects, engineers, and manufacturers in ensuring a structurally adequate design is achieved for components and cladding, exterior fenestration, and cladding systems subjected to wind loads.
According to Rich Rinka, FGIA Technical Manager, improvements in predicting wind velocities and patterns have been made in recent years, making it possible to design buildings more reliably using the data and formulas provided in the 2016 and 2022 editions of ASCE/SEI 7. However, under certain conditions, Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel (BLWT) testing is still necessary, and AAMA TIR-A15-23 provides comprehensive information about wind load determination for fenestration systems, including BLWT testing and its use.
FGIA members can purchase the report from the online store at the discounted rate of $20, while non-members can purchase it for $60. Additionally, FGIA encourages members to learn more about ASCE/SEI7 from a presentation available on their website, which requires a member login to view.
