A new Tiffany & Co. flagship store has opened in Taikoo Li Sanlitun, Beijing, designed as a luminous landmark within one of the city’s most active luxury retail zones. Positioned at a key pedestrian crossroads in the northern section of the district, the four-storey building is defined by long sightlines and constant movement, conditions that the architecture responds to with a façade that changes as people pass.
Instead of relying on oversized branding graphics, MVRDV builds the identity directly into the building skin. The exterior is wrapped in curving, translucent, textured glass fins, arranged as a dense vertical field that rises the full height of the store. Each fin carries a gentle curvature, creating a rippling surface that reads differently depending on viewing angle: from afar it appears smooth and sculptural, while close-up it becomes layered and almost textile-like in its depth.

The façade is designed to work through repetition and optical overlap. As the fins stack visually, the layering effect intensifies reflections and enhances the sense of motion across the surface. Small gaps between fins also allow controlled glimpses toward the interior, revealing hints of the jewellery displays without fully exposing the retail space.
The design concept references the sculptural language of Elsa Peretti®, taking cues from her iconic Bone Cuff and translating its flowing geometry into architectural scale. The Beijing flagship is described as the fifth in a sequence of façade concepts developed by MVRDV for Tiffany, each project exploring a distinct three-dimensional motif through material and form.
In daylight, the glass brings its own character: the fins were selected for a natural blue tone, which becomes more pronounced as light travels through multiple layers. At night, the building shifts again, illuminated in the brand’s signature Tiffany Blue® to create a soft, diffuse glow in the surrounding retail streetscape.

A key technical detail is the lighting integration. Rather than adding visible fixtures, illumination modules are embedded directly into custom mounting brackets, minimising the presence of hardware and keeping the façade visually clean. The result is a consistent glow along the fins while preserving the continuous outline of the glass edges.
Beyond visual impact, the system is designed around lifecycle thinking. The façade is engineered to be demountable, meaning the glass fins and brackets can be removed without damage, enabling future reuse or recycling, an approach increasingly relevant for retail environments that evolve frequently.
