Kazakhstan Begins Construction of Alatau City, A Futuristic Urban Megahub

Kazakhstan is embarking on one of the most ambitious urban development projects in Central Asia with the launch of Alatau City – a brand‑new metropolis being built from scratch 47 kilometers north of Almaty. The planned city aims to rival major global urban centers, with a footprint larger than Singapore and Seoul, covering 88,000 hectares on the steppe.

Designed to be a hub of innovation, commerce, and lifestyle, Alatau City targets a population of 2 million residents by 2050, with an additional 4 million tourists annually. Planners expect the city to generate 1 million jobs and attract $20 billion in investment across sectors including technology, finance, logistics, tourism, and advanced manufacturing.

Architectural vision for the city’s skyline comes from leading global firms with experience designing world‑renowned skyscrapers such as Burj Khalifa in Dubai and One World Trade Center in New York. The signature centerpiece will be a soaring 272‑meter main tower, which will define Alatau’s urban identity.

Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2026, marking the start of phased development across residential, commercial, and public infrastructure zones. In parallel, innovative transport solutions are being tested: air taxis connecting Almaty with Alatau are underway this year, with plans for public operations within 2–3 years. These electric vertical take‑off and landing vehicles are expected to cut travel time to just 10–15 minutes.

Strategically located on the Western Europe–Western China transport corridor, Alatau City will operate as a special economic zone, featuring its own airport, railway junctions, and direct governance tie‑ins with the national government.

Kazakhstan’s success with transforming Astana from a small steppe town into a modern capital offers a striking precedent, and now Alatau seeks to become the next emblem of national ambition and regional connectivity.
