FunGlass researchers Ali Talimian and Rana Surjyakanta participated in the EMERGE-EU Networking Visit for Emerging Researchers in Advanced Materials, a European initiative designed to connect early-career scientists with key actors in the EU research and innovation ecosystem. The programme took place across Brussels and Ghent, bringing together researchers from across Europe to explore collaboration opportunities and future research pathways in advanced materials.
The Brussels sessions provided participants with in-depth insights into Horizon Europe funding frameworks, including ERC, COST, and EIC programmes. Expert-led discussions focused on scientific career development, proposal preparation strategies, and long-term research positioning within the European Research Area. Structured matchmaking and peer-exchange activities further encouraged cross-institutional dialogue, laying the groundwork for future collaborative initiatives.

For FunGlass, the networking visit directly supports ongoing research efforts, particularly in the field of AI-assisted material discovery. Knowledge gained during the programme will contribute to advancing activities within the GlaScratchResistance project, reinforcing FunGlass’s strategic focus on innovation, data-driven materials research, and international cooperation.
The visit concluded in Ghent, where participants were hosted by Ghent University. The programme included meetings with the Research Coordination Office and guided tours of advanced materials laboratories within the Department of Chemistry. These sessions offered firsthand exposure to cutting-edge research infrastructure and enabled valuable technical exchanges with specialists in materials chemistry and synthesis.
FunGlass also extends its sincere appreciation to the Slovak Liaison Office for Research and Development (SLORD)for facilitating and supporting the participation of its researchers, as well as to the Ghent University teams for their hospitality and insightful discussions.
Through this engagement, Ali Talimian and Rana Surjyakanta return with strengthened European research networks, a deeper understanding of EU funding opportunities, and concrete ideas for future collaborations, further reinforcing FunGlass’s contribution to impactful advanced materials research in Europe.
