A potentially serious industrial fire was successfully contained at SIGCO’s glass fabrication facility in Westbrook, Maine, after firefighters responded to reports of smoke and active fire inside a glass laminating machine late on Wednesday night.

According to the Westbrook Fire Department, the incident prompted an immediate multi-agency response due to the size of the manufacturing facility and the potential risk of fire spreading throughout the production area. Mutual aid crews from Gorham, Portland, South Portland and Scarborough were dispatched to assist firefighting operations and provide station coverage.

Upon arrival, crews from Ladder Four and Medic Two located active fire within the laminating equipment. Working closely with SIGCO employees, firefighters safely isolated the machine’s electrical power before forcing entry into the unit to access the burning internal components. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could extend beyond the equipment and ignite surrounding production machinery or building materials.

After suppression operations were completed, firefighters ventilated the warehouse to remove smoke and improve air quality before beginning overhaul procedures to ensure no hidden hotspots remained. No injuries were reported, and only nine employees were inside the facility at the time of the incident.
