FGIA Updates Thermoplastic, Cellulosic Composite Exterior Profiles Specification

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has announced the release of its updated AAMA 309-25 standard, titled Standard Specification for Classification of Rigid Thermoplastic/Cellulosic Composite Materials. This revised document outlines minimum performance criteria for composite profiles used in windows, doors, and skylights, replacing the previous 2013 edition.

According to Glenn Ferris, FGIA’s Fenestration Standards Specialist and the task group’s staff liaison, the goal of this update is to ensure reliable performance in real-world applications.

Profiles that meet this specification are considered structurally sound and safe for use, provided they are incorporated into well-designed products.

Ferris noted. He emphasized that the standard covers not only structural integrity, but also physical properties, weight and dimensional consistency, and compliance with U.S. lead content regulations.

AAMA 309-25 is organized into nine comprehensive sections, each targeting a specific aspect of material classification and testing:

  • Section 1 establishes the document’s scope and performance criteria.
  • Section 2 lists referenced standards incorporated into the specification.
  • Section 3 clarifies the objectives of the standard.
  • Section 4 outlines the system for classifying thermoplastic/cellulosic composites.
  • Section 5 describes sampling procedures for inspection.
  • Section 6 details mandatory physical properties of the profiles.
  • Section 7 specifies testing requirements.
  • Section 8 defines guidelines for preparing test specimens.
  • Section 9 provides methodologies for evaluating performance.

This updated standard reinforces FGIA’s ongoing commitment to improving product quality and safety within the fenestration industry. AAMA 309-25 is now accessible through the FGIA online store and can be purchased at a member price of $25 or $70 for non-members.
