Two Key Documents Revised for the First Time Since 2011
The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released updated editions of two key documents: AAMA 1002-25, Specification for Secondary Storm Products for Windows and Sliding Glass Doors, and AAMA 1102-25, Specification for Side-hinged Secondary Storm Doors. These specifications, last revised in 2011, are now available through the FGIA online store.
Energy Efficiency Drives Renewed Interest
Secondary storm products, once referred to as “combination storm windows” or “insulating storm products” have seen growing interest as energy efficiency becomes a top priority in building design. According to Rich Rinka, FGIA Technical Manager, increased attention from the Department of Energy and manufacturers has pushed these products into the scope of the North American Fenestration Standard (NAFS) since 2011.
“These updates reflect the industry’s growing need for energy-saving, high-performance retrofit solutions,” said Rinka.
What the Standards Provide
The updated documents offer clear criteria for performance and quality. Manufacturers can use them to test and certify products; labs can apply them to structure test plans; and specifiers can reference them when selecting compliant, energy-efficient solutions. This standardization supports consistent quality across the industry.
Benefits for Retrofit and New Construction
Secondary storm products improve thermal insulation, reduce air infiltration, and enhance sound control, all without full window or door replacement. These advantages make them especially attractive for retrofits in older buildings, as well as energy-conscious new construction.
Accessing the Standards
AAMA 1002-25 and AAMA 1102-25 are available now in the FGIA online store. These revisions mark an important step forward in aligning product performance with today’s energy and sustainability goals.
