EU Parliament Votes in Favor of Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

The European Parliament has taken a significant step forward in addressing energy efficiency and emissions reduction. With 343 votes in favor, 216 against, and 78 abstentions, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) has been adopted. This landmark decision has been hailed as a crucial move towards lower energy bills, reducing energy poverty, and tackling 36% of EU emissions. MEP rapporteur C. Cuffe tweeted that this was a “huge step forward” in the fight against climate change.

Glass for Europe, a leading industry representative, has welcomed the adopted text, which balances the different visions of the European Parliament while providing flexibility to Member States. This decision provides the industry with the stability and predictability it needs to deliver on the Renovation Wave.

Europe’s building stock is in dire need of transformation to save energy and reduce imported gas. Although this effort will take time and effort over the long term, today’s vote provides the much-needed impetus to pursue and accelerate building renovation efforts.

Co-negotiators must build a constructive dialogue in the months to come to ensure that the EPBD delivers on its purpose. The European flat glass industry is ready to deliver on the ground by manufacturing high-performance glazing, which can significantly improve comfort, reduce energy for heating and cooling, and contribute to the decarbonization of EU buildings. Doubling the window replacement rate could save almost 36.4 Mtoe in 2023, making this a critical step towards achieving Europe’s climate goals.
