Curved Glass Brings Movement and Light to Toronto’s BMO Academy

Curved glass is increasingly redefining how interior architecture is experienced, moving beyond aesthetics to shape light, circulation and emotion within space. At the BMO Academy in downtown Toronto, this approach takes center stage through a sculptural staircase that transforms a functional element into a defining architectural gesture.

Located within BMO Place and designed by Zeidler Architects, the BMO Academy integrates education, collaboration and event environments into a revitalized legacy structure. At its heart stands a sweeping curved glass staircase, fabricated by Glasshape and installed in collaboration with EeStairs.

The balustrades comprise 315 square feet of TemperShield 26.28-mm laminated, bent and tempered low-iron glass. The glass curves in plan, while each individual panel features uniquely shaped top and bottom edges. The result is a continuous, undulating ribbon of transparency, an architectural expression inspired by the ripple effect of water, symbolizing connection and continuous growth.

According to Andrew Forrest, director of sales/partner at Glasshape, achieving this geometry required exceptional fabrication precision. The complexity of maintaining consistent curvature while ensuring structural performance and seamless alignment across multiple panels demanded rigorous geometric control.

From concept to construction, the process was equally intricate. Zeidler Architects began with clay models to explore fluid wave-like forms before transitioning to advanced 3D modeling. Technical coordination with EeStairs was critical, particularly in addressing installation logistics. The staircase’s weight relative to the building’s load capacity required engineered lifting beams and carefully sequenced assembly to ensure safe hoisting and placement.
