Century Aluminum Halts One Potline at Iceland Smelter Due to Electrical Issue

Production temporarily stopped at Century Aluminum, after an electrical equipment failure.

Norðurál Grundartangi ehf, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Century Aluminum Company (NASDAQ: CENX), has temporarily stopped production on one of its two potlines at the Grundartangi smelter in Iceland following an electrical equipment failure. No injuries were reported.

The shutdown has temporarily reduced production at the smelter by roughly two-thirds, while the second potline continues to operate at full capacity. Century Aluminum is conducting an impact assessment and developing a timeline for replacement equipment to restore full production. Updates are expected during the company’s quarterly earnings conference call on November 6.

The company anticipates that losses arising from the incident will be covered under its property and business interruption insurance policies. It is also working closely with affected customers and suppliers to mitigate any operational disruptions.

Century Aluminum, the largest producer of primary aluminum in the United States, operates integrated facilities in the U.S., Iceland, the Netherlands, and Jamaica, producing bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminum products.

The company noted that statements about future events are forward-looking and subject to risks and uncertainties, which may cause actual outcomes to differ materially.
