Cardinal Glass Advances First Carbon Capture System for Float Glass

Cardinal Glass Industries has committed to installing what it describes as the world’s first carbon capture system at its Cardinal FG float glass facility in Winlock, Washington, USA. The company has already issued purchase orders and paid deposits for critical and long-lead equipment, with system operations targeted for Q1 2029.

The project follows feasibility, design and engineering work conducted with K2-CO2, based in Padova, Italy. The planned installation is expected to capture approximately 130,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ annually, with a design capability to remove up to 95% of CO₂ from targeted float glass manufacturing process streams.

Float glass production generates emissions from both the energy required to operate continuous, high-temperature furnaces and the decomposition of raw materials during glassmaking. The Winlock system is being developed to address both sources within selected process streams while remaining integrated with the existing production operation.

Cardinal and K2-CO2 will deploy control and measurement systems to monitor capture performance. The project is not currently receiving government funding, while Cardinal is also evaluating potential future markets for the captured CO₂.

The companies have patented a system designed to enable the use of additional gases contained in the resulting flue gas, adapting carbon capture technology to the specific operating requirements of float glass production.

According to Cardinal President Bowie Neumayer, Winlock is intended as the first step in a broader deployment strategy. Performance data from the installation will help determine the potential for applying the technology across other Cardinal float glass facilities.
