Laser processing is becoming an increasingly important technology in advanced glass manufacturing, offering capabilities that conventional mechanical methods cannot always achieve efficiently. Cutting, drilling, texturing, marking and selective coating removal can be performed with high precision and without physical tool contact.
In fenestration, laser systems can carry out precise edge deletion, removing functional coatings from defined areas of the glass perimeter to support subsequent bonding and sealing. The technology can also produce accurately positioned openings for vacuum insulating glass and microstructures for bird-friendly glazing.
Its advantages become particularly evident in applications requiring complex geometries, small radii, fine contours and frequent design changes. Unlike mechanical processing, laser treatment does not depend on direct tool contact, reducing tooling constraints and providing greater flexibility for customised glass products.
Important growth areas include consumer electronics and automotive interiors, where cover glass, touch interfaces, displays and optical components require tight dimensional tolerances, consistent surface quality and repeatable processing. AR and IR optical applications are also creating demand for highly controlled glass processing.
However, successful implementation depends on more than the laser source itself. Beam delivery, scanning optics, motion systems, automation, software, inspection and quality control must function as an integrated production system. A laser installed without appropriate process integration may fail to deliver its expected productivity or economic benefits.
Advances in laser sources, optical components, scanners and industrial controls are expanding the range of commercially viable applications while improving precision and process stability.
