The Australian Aluminium Council has publicly voiced its support for the Australian government’s new Statement of Expectations for the Anti-Dumping Commission.
The Council, representing the breadth of the Australian aluminium industry, from bauxite mining to downstream processing, sees this initiative as a critical step in safeguarding domestic manufacturers against unfair trade practices.
According to Council CEO, Marghanita Johnson, the distortion of international trade flows poses a significant threat. These distortions can disrupt efficient market operations and lead to detrimental trade diversion, ultimately hindering the competitiveness of Australian manufacturers. Johnson emphasized the importance of the government’s clear articulation of expectations for the Anti-Dumping Commission, particularly in light of the increasing challenges faced by Australian manufacturing in the current global landscape. This clarity provides a framework for protecting Australian industry from predatory pricing and other unfair trade tactics.
The Council’s commitment to supporting downstream manufacturers is further evidenced by the addition of five new downstream members in 2025: Almax, Extrusions Australia, Inex, National Aluminium, and Alxin. This expansion solidifies the Council’s position as the leading voice for the Australian aluminium industry, now representing over 95% of the country’s extrusion sector.
“We will continue working with the Government to ensure Australia’s downstream manufacturers can compete through free and fair trade,” stated Ms. Johnson. This collaborative approach is deemed essential to fostering a business environment that allows Australian companies to thrive.
The Australian Aluminium Council believes that with the right policy settings, Australia’s manufacturing industries can attract increased trade and investment. This, in turn, will support the continued growth of the aluminium sector and enable it to meet the ever-increasing global demand for this versatile and essential material. The Council’s endorsement of the government’s initiative reflects a shared vision for a strong and competitive Australian manufacturing sector, built on the principles of fair trade and a level playing field.
