ASWS Completes Historic Woolwich Arsenal Refurbishment

ASWS completes Woolwich Arsenal refurbishment project

Associated Steel Window Services (ASWS), a Steel Window Association member, has completed a significant heritage refurbishment at the historic Woolwich Arsenal in London. The project focused on Buildings 19 and 41, where ASWS refurbished over a dozen large steel windows, including 10 with semi-circular heads, while removing three others to be replaced with new doors or blocked openings.

The windows presented a particular challenge due to their deeply recessed outer frames, originally designed to withstand potential explosions, reflecting the site’s military history. Each window, measuring 2,400mm high by 1,500mm wide, was carefully removed and transported to ASWS’s London workshop for grit-blasting and the replacement of heavily corroded sections.

By refurbishing and reusing these windows rather than recycling the metal, ASWS provided significant cost savings and preserved the integrity of this historic complex, which dates back to the late 17th century. The project highlights ASWS’s expertise in heritage metalwork restoration.
